Outdoor fitness equipment for schools: keeping older students active

Tim Rand — Founder, certified AS 4685 playground inspector

Senior students often outgrow traditional play. Here is how calisthenics rigs, ninja and agility courses, and fitness circuits keep upper-primary and secondary students moving — and what Australian schools should plan for.

Most playgrounds are designed with younger children in mind, and by the time students reach upper primary and secondary, the swings and slides no longer hold their interest. The result is often a cohort of older students who drift away from active play altogether. Outdoor fitness equipment changes that — it gives teenagers and tweens a reason to move, compete and build strength in a way that feels age-appropriate rather than childish. Here is what schools should know about senior play, calisthenics, agility and ninja courses, and fitness circuits, and how to plan an installation that lasts.

Why older students need a different kind of play

The equipment that delights a five-year-old rarely engages a fourteen-year-old. Older students respond to challenge, measurable progress and a bit of friendly competition. Senior play spaces lean into that: taller structures, real physical exertion, and activities that reward repetition and skill. Done well, a fitness area becomes a magnet at lunchtime and a genuine asset for PE and sport programs.

It also broadens who gets active. Not every teenager wants to play organised sport, but many will happily hang off a bar, race a friend through an obstacle course, or work through a circuit at their own pace.

Calisthenics and strength rigs

Calisthenics equipment uses bodyweight resistance — pull-up bars, dip stations, parallel bars, monkey bars and climbing frames — to build upper-body and core strength. It is hard-wearing, takes up relatively little footprint, and suits a wide range of abilities because students simply do what they can and progress from there.

  • Pull-up and chin-up bars at staggered heights for different year levels
  • Dip and push-up stations for upper-body work
  • Parallel and horizontal bars for core and balance
  • Multi-station rigs that let several students train at once

Because these structures invite vigorous use, getting the softfall surfacing right matters. We surface to AS 4422 and match the depth or rubber type to the fall height of each station — see our surfacing guide for how that is calculated.

Ninja and agility courses

Ninja and agility courses have surged in popularity, and for good reason — they turn fitness into a game. Hanging rings, swinging steps, balance beams, cargo nets and warped walls reward grip strength, balance and timing. Students can race the clock, challenge each other, or simply work on clearing the next obstacle.

These courses scale well. A compact linear run suits a tight budget or a smaller yard, while a larger loop can become a feature space for whole-class PE rotations and house competitions. Our freestanding equipment range and our play-system versus freestanding comparison can help you decide how to lay it out.

Fitness circuits and trails

A fitness circuit spreads individual stations around the grounds or along a path, each one targeting a different movement — step-ups, sit-up benches, leg presses, balance and stretch stations. Signage at each station guides correct technique, which makes circuits ideal for self-directed use and for structured PE lessons alike.

  • Distributed stations that ease congestion and spread activity across the grounds
  • Built-in instructional signage so students train safely without supervision
  • A natural fit alongside an existing running track or oval
  • Options that double as community fitness assets outside school hours
Give older students something to measure themselves against, and they will use it without being told to.

Planning, compliance and budget

Senior fitness equipment carries real fall heights and dynamic loads, so it must be specified and installed correctly. All Kidzspace equipment is certified to AS 4685 and independently certified at handover, so your school has documented proof of compliance for insurers and auditors. Our compliance overview explains what that involves.

On budget, fitness areas span a wide range depending on the number of stations, the surfacing chosen and site preparation. We provide fixed-price, itemised quotes so there are no surprises — and our cost guide and funding guide can help you build a business case or tap grants. Schools that share a space with the wider community after hours often find that opens up additional funding avenues.
