How much does a council playground cost in Australia? (2026)

A council or destination playground typically costs from about $120,000 delivered and installed, ex GST, and large feature playgrounds regularly exceed $500,000. Those are whole-project figures: equipment, compliant AS 4422 softfall, site preparation, installation and independent certification. On a large public site, surfacing alone can run $70,000+, so compare quotes on scope, not on the equipment price.

At a glance

  • Council / destination playground: from about $120,000 delivered
  • Large feature playgrounds regularly exceed $500,000
  • Softfall alone can run $70,000+ on a large area
  • A 6–10 station park gym: about $20,000–$70,000 delivered

The short answer

For a council park or reserve, plan on at least $120,000 for a destination playground delivered and installed, and well beyond $500,000 for a large feature playground. Neighbourhood parks with a single play system sit lower, closer to school-scale budgets. Every figure on this page is ex GST and indicative. The only accurate number is a fixed-price quote for your site.

Project typeDelivered cost range
Single freestanding pieces (equipment only)about $2,000–$10,000
Toddler / early-years spaceabout $30,000–$60,000 delivered
Primary-school multi-activity systemabout $60,000–$120,000 delivered

Softfall is a cost line of its own

Surfacing is priced per square metre of fall zone, not per piece of equipment. On a destination site it can rival the equipment cost, and accessible surfaces such as synthetic turf and wet-pour cost more than loose fill. Rates exclude excavation, drainage and edging.

SurfaceRate per m²
Certified mulch or sandAbout $60
Synthetic turf on shock padAbout $110
Wet-pour rubberAbout $160

Indicative, ex GST, supplied and installed on a prepared site. Reviewed September 2026.

What drives the price

  • The size of the site and the number of play zones and age groups served
  • Inclusive, all-abilities elements: ramps, wider decks, accessible surfacing and access paths
  • Custom theming or culturally themed, consultation-led design
  • Vandal-resistant, low-maintenance and corrosion-resistant materials for public and coastal sites
  • Site works: excavation, drainage, edging and access for machinery
  • Optional extras such as shade sails, fencing, seating and landscaping, quoted as separate line items

Adding outdoor fitness

Many council projects pair the playground with an outdoor gym. As a guide, a complete 6–10 station park gym with surfacing and installation usually lands between $20,000 and $70,000 delivered, ex GST, with fitness stations about $1,000–$5,000 each for the equipment.

What's included in a Kidzspace quote

Frequently asked

How much does a council playground cost?

As a guide, a council or destination playground starts from about $120,000 delivered and installed, ex GST, and large feature playgrounds regularly exceed $500,000. That covers the equipment, compliant softfall, site preparation, installation and certification.

Why do council playgrounds cost more than school playgrounds?

Scale and specification. Public sites are usually larger, serve every age and ability, need more softfall, and call for vandal-resistant, low-maintenance materials built to last decades outdoors.

Is softfall included in the price?

Yes. Every fixed-price quote includes compliant AS 4422 softfall. On a large area surfacing alone can run $70,000+, which is why equipment-only prices are misleading.

Can a council playground be built in stages?

Yes. We can design the full vision and structure it so you add elements as budget or grants allow, without wasted work.

Do you provide tender documentation?

Yes. We supply the specifications, drawings, itemised pricing and compliance documentation your tender or supplier-panel process needs.
