Outdoor fitness & gym equipment

Outdoor fitness for all ages — stations, calisthenics, agility, senior and inclusive equipment.

Outdoor fitness is booming across Australia, with parks and open spaces becoming free community gyms. Kidzspace supplies and installs commercial outdoor gym and fitness equipment Australia-wide — strength stations, calisthenics rigs, and senior-friendly and inclusive units. We work with councils, schools, sports clubs, architects and developers to create outdoor fitness stations and sports parks designed to Australian safety standards (AS 16630) and built to last in Australian conditions.

Outdoor fitness equipment turns parks and open space into a free community gym, and the right mix depends on who the space serves. Stations and calisthenics rigs suit general adult fitness; agility and ninja equipment suits teenagers and confident adults after a more athletic challenge; senior, inclusive and children's equipment extends the same open space to older adults, people with disability and families exercising together.

All outdoor fitness equipment is engineered to AS/NZS 4486.1 and the relevant fitness-equipment safety standards for permanent public installation, with corrosion-resistant options available for coastal and waterfront sites. As a guide, single freestanding stations typically run about $2,000 to $10,000, ex GST, each, covering the equipment, a compliant safety zone, delivery and installation; a full multi-station circuit scales from there. AS/NZS 4486.1 also recommends routine visual, 1 to 3 monthly operational and annual comprehensive inspections once equipment is installed, which we can schedule as part of an ongoing maintenance plan.

Layout matters as much as equipment choice. A neighbourhood park usually works best as one connected circuit of 4 to 6 stations that a walker can complete in a loop, while a council precinct or school fitness trail has room to zone strength, agility and senior or inclusive stations separately so different user groups aren't competing for the same space. Our design team lays this out from a site plan and the age groups and fitness levels you're catering for, the same free concept-design process used for playgrounds.

Warranty terms mirror our playground equipment: 25 years on hot-dip galvanised structural steel, 15 years on powder-coated steel, HDPE and HPL, 10 years on stainless steel, 5 years on rubber and rope components and 2 years on moving parts and bearings, provided the equipment is installed and maintained to our guidelines and the AS/NZS 4486.1 inspection schedule above is kept up.

Fitness stations still need a compliant safety surface underneath the equipment, sized to each station's fall height under AS 4422, the same softfall standard used for playground surfacing. Wet-pour rubber, synthetic turf and engineered mulch all work, and many councils and schools pair a fitness circuit with a playground next door so one surfacing contractor and one softfall specification covers both spaces in a single job.

Frequently asked questions

How many stations does an outdoor gym need?

There's no fixed number, a small circuit of 4 to 6 stations suits a neighbourhood park, while a full precinct for a council or school might run to 15 or more. We size the layout to the site and community during design.

Does outdoor fitness equipment need softfall surfacing?

Yes, each station needs a compliant safety surface sized to its fall height under AS 4422, the same standard used for playground softfall. Wet-pour rubber, synthetic turf and engineered mulch are all suitable.

What warranty applies to outdoor fitness equipment?

The same tiered cover as our playground equipment: 25 years on hot-dip galvanised structural steel, 15 years on powder-coated steel, HDPE and HPL, 10 years on stainless steel, 5 years on rubber and rope components and 2 years on moving parts and bearings, provided it's installed and maintained to our guidelines.

Is outdoor fitness equipment suitable for all ages?

Most core stations suit teenagers and adults; the senior, inclusive and children's categories extend the same site to older adults, people with disability and younger users with equipment scaled or adapted for each group.

How often does outdoor fitness equipment need inspecting?

AS/NZS 4486.1 recommends routine visual checks, operational inspections every 1 to 3 months and a comprehensive annual inspection, the same regime as playground equipment.

Does coastal or waterfront fitness equipment need special materials?

Yes, our corrosion-resistant, marine-grade range is built specifically for sites exposed to salt air, where standard powder-coated steel would corrode faster.
