The short answer
For a commercial playground, plan on about $180–$350 per m² for an engineered shade sail installed, which puts a typical 60–150 m² sail at roughly $12,000–$45,000. A waterproof or steel-framed shade structure costs more, about $450–$900 per m² installed. Shade sail or shade structure?
A tensioned shade sail on engineered steel posts is the most common and most economical way to shade a playground. It suits most schools, childcare centres and parks where the main goal is cutting UV on play equipment and seating. A waterproof or steel-framed shade structure costs considerably more per square metre. It gives all-weather cover, handles larger spans and is often chosen for centres that want to use the space in rain.
What drives the price
- Area covered: price scales with square metres, but engineering and footings add a fixed cost to every job
- Wind rating and engineering: sails over playgrounds are normally engineered to the local wind region
- Post and footing depth, which depends on soil conditions and any rock
- Height and access for the crew and for concrete trucks or drilling rigs
- Fabric choice: commercial HDPE shade cloth versus waterproof membrane
- Council or school approvals, which can require drawings and sign-off before work starts
Supply only versus installed
Supply-only shade sail fabric and hardware is roughly 40–50% of the installed price. The rest is engineering, footings, posts and installation, which is where most of the risk sits. A supply-only sail is only worth considering if you already have engineered posts and a qualified installer.
Shade as part of a playground project
Shade is quoted as its own line item, so you can see exactly where your budget goes. Every fixed-price quote is itemised and covers the equipment, compliant softfall surfacing (AS 4422), site preparation, delivery, installation by our own crew, and independent compliance certification at handover. Optional extras like shade sails, fencing and landscaping are quoted as separate line items so you can see exactly where your budget goes.
