What Is a Flying Fox Playground? Cableway Design and Safety

A flying fox is a playground cableway: a seat or handle that travels along a tensioned cable between two towers. It is one of the most requested park items, and one of the most space-hungry. Here is what to plan for.

How a flying fox works
Riders board at the raised launch end, grip the handle or sit on the seat, and travel down a slight gradient to the far tower. A braking system, usually a spring buffer or elastomer stop, slows the trolley before the end. Gravity sets the speed, so the gradient and cable tension are tuned during installation so the ride is exciting but arrives slowly enough to dismount safely.
The parts:
- Launch platform: a step or platform so the rider starts above the cable's low point.
- Cable: galvanised or stainless steel wire rope, tensioned between towers.
- Trolley: sealed bearings running on the cable, carrying the seat or handle.
- Seat or handle: a disc seat, a bucket seat for inclusive use, or a simple grip bar.
- Brake and return: buffer at the end and often a return cord so the trolley can be pulled back.
Space and surfacing
Flying foxes are long. A typical park unit runs 20 to 30 metres between towers, and the fall zone extends the full length of the cable plus clearance on both sides. That whole corridor needs surfacing tested to AS 4422 for the free height of fall, which for a cableway is measured from the seat at its highest point, not from the ground under the tower.
Plan for a corridor roughly 30 metres by 5 metres for a standard unit. Mulch or sand is the most economical way to cover that area, at about $60 per square metre; wet-pour rubber runs about $160 per square metre and is usually reserved for the landing and launch pads.
Safety rules that shape the design
AS 4685.4 sets the requirements for playground cableways. The design points that matter most:
- Nothing may sit inside the cable corridor, including trees, paths and other equipment.
- The trolley and seat must not create entrapment points for fingers, clothing or heads.
- The end stop must bring the trolley to rest without a hard impact.
- The cable must remain clear of the ground at full load and full sag.
- Seat height at the low point must let a rider's feet drag safely without grounding.
A flying fox is not a zipline. Commercial adventure ziplines carry harnessed riders at height and are governed by different standards.
Who it suits
Flying foxes are best for ages 6 and up in parks, school playgrounds for upper primary, holiday parks and destination playgrounds. Disc seats suit confident riders; bucket seats with a backrest make the ride available to younger children and to children with limited trunk control. Councils often specify one of each on a twin-cable unit.
