How to Design a Tween Playground

22 October 2024

Planning a public playground that will appeal to tweens but don’t know where to start?
In this article, we’ll discuss the important considerations to make when designing a tween playground, and how Kidzspace can help.

Factors to Consider When Designing a Playground for Tweens

Before you start designing the ultimate public tween playground, there are many things you need to consider if you want it to be effective and popular. In this section, we’ll talk about them in more detail.

Theme & Age Group

While having a specific theme, like underwater creatures or pirates may have been appropriate for a playground aimed at younger children, tweens are likely to be turned off by such things.

Think about the demographic you’re appealing to and what it is they like, because when designing a tween playground, it probably won’t be a pirate  or animal  themed area (but if it is, that’s OK).

Type of Equipment & How it’s Used

The type of equipment you install for a playground aimed at four year olds will be vastly different to that you install for tweens. Rather than castles and ships, it might be more appealing to have equipment that is challenging and encourages strength and mobility training:

– group swings
– agility or balance equipment

– climbing nets
– ziplines or monkey bars

Allow for Freespace

Tweens are likely to have their own ideas about what they want from a park and the kinds of things they want to do at the playground. As such, it’s necessary to create a separate space where they can explore such creativity with ball games and other team or solo sports.

Spectator Areas

Not all tweens go to the park or playground to actually use the equipment. Sometimes, it’s enough for them to be in the same space as others their age.

Therefore, you should make sure to include spectator areas, where tweens can watch the activity happening around them, without feeling pressured to participate.

Accessibility

When designing any type of playground – either for tweens, toddlers or anyone in between – accessibility for those who are disabled or use mobility equipment is incredibly important.  This includes ramps, rubber matting, accessible toilets and the like so no one is left out.
